- 1.The point P has coordinates (0, 12). Write down the axis that P lies on and the y-coordinate of P.
- 2.The triangular numbers begin 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, ... Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 3.A rectangle has width x cm. Its length is 3 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 38 cm. Form an equation and solve it to find x.
- 4.Grace says that 2(x + 1) and 2x + 2 always have the same value. Work out the value of both expressions when x = 3.
- 5.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
- 6.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 7.A quadratic curve has a minimum turning point at (3, −4). Which of these statements about the curve must be true?
- 8.A car's speed increases steadily while it accelerates. Its speed v m/s after t seconds is given by v = u + at, where u is the starting speed in m/s and a is the acceleration in m/s². A car starts at u = 4 m/s and accelerates at a = 2 m/s² until it reaches v = 20 m/s. Work out t, the time taken in seconds.
- 9.A colony of bacteria doubles in number every hour. At 9am there are 5 bacteria in the colony. Work out how many bacteria there will be at 12 noon.

- 11.The diagram shows the graph of the cost, in pounds, of a taxi journey plotted against the distance travelled, in miles, for journeys of up to 4 miles. The same fixed charge and the same cost per mile apply to longer journeys. Work out the cost of a 6-mile journey.
- 12.Given that (x − 4)(x + 9) = 0, write down the two solutions of x.
- 13.The point A is at (5, −3). In which quadrant does A lie?
- 14.Which of these numbers is a cube number?
