- 1.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
- 2.ABCD is a parallelogram. A has coordinates (−3, 1), B has coordinates (2, 1) and C has coordinates (4, 4). Work out the coordinates of D.
- 3.Which of these is an equation, rather than an expression, a formula or an identity?
- 4.A number, n, is tripled and then 4.5 is added. The result is 22.5. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 5.A sequence has the position-to-term rule: the term is the square of the position number. Its first four terms are 1, 4, 9, 16. Work out the 10th term.
- 6.Harry will spend at most £150 on a party. The cake costs £60 and each helium balloon costs £3. Solve an inequality to find all the possible numbers of balloons, x, that he can buy.
- 7.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £30 plus £25 for each hour worked. The total bill for a job was £130. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
- 8.Water is poured into a container at a constant rate. A graph of the depth of the water, in cm, against the time since pouring began, in minutes, is a straight line through the origin, and it passes through the point (3, 12). Use the graph to work out the depth of the water after 7 minutes.
- 9.Simplify 5x + 3y − 2x + y.
- 10.A photo printing service has two adverts for its price. Advert A: cost in pounds = 3(2n + 4) for n photos. Advert B: cost in pounds = 6n + 12. A customer says the two adverts always charge the same amount. Is the customer correct?
- 11.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x − y = 2.
- 12.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 13.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 2x + y = 8.
- 14.A school trip costs a £15 deposit plus £9 per student for the coach. The total cost for a class is £186. Work out how many students went on the trip.
- 15.The diagram shows a straight line passing through the origin, drawn on a numbered grid. Which of these points lies on the line?
