- 1.A mobile phone plan charges a fixed monthly fee plus an amount for each gigabyte of data used. The total cost £C for using g gigabytes in a month is given by C = 15 + 2g. What does the number 2 represent in this formula?
- 2.A square has sides of length y cm. Write down an expression for the perimeter of the square.
- 3.A company's profit was £2000 in its first year. Each following year, the profit increases by £800. Work out the first year in which the profit is more than £7000.
- 4.The formula for the circumference of a circle is C = 2πr, where r is the radius. Make r the subject of the formula.
- 5.Which expression means the same as 3 × a × b?
- 6.The simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x − y = 1 are given. Work out the value of y.
- 7.An arithmetic sequence has first term 40 and common difference −6. Work out the 9th term of the sequence.

- 10.A geometric sequence has first term 5, and each term after that is 3 times the term before it. Work out the first term of the sequence that is greater than 1000.
- 11.Write down the expression that means the same as (x + 7) ÷ 4.
- 12.The first four terms of a sequence are 4, 9, 14, 19. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 13.A plumber charges a £35 call-out fee plus £20 for each hour worked, h. On a certain job the total charge was £115. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
- 14.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 4, 8, 16, 32, ... Sequence Q: 4, 8, 12, 16, ... Sequence R: 4, 7, 12, 19, ... Sequence S: 4, 9, 16, 25, ... Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 15.A geometric sequence starts at 3, and each term after that is found by multiplying the term before it by 2. Write down the first four terms.
