- 1.A sequence has the position-to-term rule: the term is the position number multiplied by itself. Its first five terms are 1, 4, 9, 16, 25. Work out the 8th term.
- 2.The formula for the profit, £P, made on an item is P = S − C, where S is the selling price and C is the cost price. Make S the subject of the formula.
- 3.n = 3. Work out the value of (2n)².
- 4.Priya has a budget of £50 for a school trip. The coach costs £14 and each student ticket costs £4. Using the inequality 14 + 4s ≤ 50, work out the greatest number of student tickets, s, she can buy.
- 5.A line segment has one endpoint at (−6, 2) and its midpoint at (−1, 5). Work out the coordinates of the other endpoint.
- 6.Here are the first five terms of an arithmetic sequence: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14. Work out the 8th term.
- 7.Solve the inequality 9 − 2x ≥ 1.
- 8.A phone company works out a monthly bill, £B, using the formula B = 18 + 0.05t, where £18 is the fixed monthly charge and t is the number of extra text messages sent beyond the free allowance, each charged at 5p. Farida's bill for one month is £24.50. Work out the number of extra text messages, t, she sent.
- 9.A number machine multiplies its input by 2 and then subtracts 5. Work out the output when the input is 6.
- 10.A company's profit is £500 in its first year. Each year after that, the profit is £300 more than the year before. Work out the profit in the company's 6th year.
- 11.Make b the subject of the formula a = 5b.
- 12.The formula for the energy stored in a stretched spring is E = (1/2)kx², where E is in joules, k is the spring constant in N/m and x is the extension in m. A spring with a spring constant of 40 N/m is stretched so that its extension is 0.3 m. Work out the energy stored in the spring.
- 13.Solve the inequality 2(3x − 1) ≥ 4x + 8.
- 14.Which of these equations is true for every value of x, making it an identity rather than an equation with just one solution?
- 15.Which of these equations gives a graph with two separate curved branches — one where x and y are both positive, and one where x and y are both negative?
