- 1.Explain why the equation 4x + 3 = 4x + 10 has no solution for x.
- 2.A quadratic graph y = ax² + bx + c has its turning point on the y-axis. Which statement about its roots must be true?
- 3.a = 2 and b = 5. Work out the value of a²b.
- 4.A taxi company charges a £2.50 booking fee plus £1.80 per mile. A journey costs £15.10 in total. Work out the number of miles travelled.
- 5.A rectangle is x cm wide and twice as long as it is wide, so its area A cm² is given by A = 2x². Work out A when x = 3.
- 6.The formula for the perimeter of a square is P = 4s, where s is the side length. Make s the subject of the formula.
- 7.The point (−4, 7) is moved 4 units to the right and 9 units down. Write down the coordinates of the point it reaches.
- 8.Solve the inequality 6.3x + 1.8 ≤ 40. Hence write down the greatest number with exactly one decimal place that satisfies the inequality.
- 9.A straight line has equation y = 4 − 3x. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 10.A student says that (x + 4)² is equivalent to x² + 16. For which value of x do the two expressions give the SAME result, making it look (misleadingly) like the student could be right?
- 11.Simplify 2a + 3b − a + 2b − b
- 12.To solve 5x − 4 = 2x + 8, Chloe's working is shown. Line 1: 5x − 4 = 2x + 8. Line 2: 3x − 4 = 8. Line 3: 3x = 4. Line 4: x = 4/3. Chloe has made a mistake in her working. Which line contains the mistake?
- 13.The formula connecting distance (d), speed (s) and time (t) is d = st. Make s the subject of the formula.
- 14.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 15.A taxi fare, in pounds, for a journey of m miles is given by the formula F = 3 + 2.5m. A journey costs £15.50. Work out the distance travelled, m, by first rearranging the formula to make m the subject, then substituting F = 15.50.
