- 1.Amelia's mother is three times as old as Amelia. Four years ago her mother was five times as old as Amelia was then. Work out Amelia's age now.
- 2.A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (4, 11). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 3.Leo is three times as old as his brother. His brother is x years old. Write down an expression for Leo's age.
- 4.Explain why the equation 4x + 3 = 4x + 10 has no solution for x.
- 5.Write down 0.2x with its coefficient written as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.The point (−4, 7) is moved 4 units to the right and 9 units down. Write down the coordinates of the point it reaches.
- 7.The graph of P = 480 ÷ V shows how the pressure, P pascals, of a gas depends on its volume, V cm³, at constant temperature. Use the relationship to work out the volume when the pressure is 32 pascals, and then work out by how much the volume increases when the pressure drops to 24 pascals.
- 8.The solution set of x ≥ −1 is drawn on a number line. Which description of that number line is correct?
- 9.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 10.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 11.Work out the value of a² − 2b when a = −3 and b = 4.
- 12.A packet contains s sweets. The sweets are shared equally between f friends. Write an expression for the number of sweets each friend receives.
- 13.The nth term of a sequence is 3n + 2. Work out the 4th term of the sequence.
- 14.Point P has coordinates (5, 2). Point P is rotated 180° about the origin to point Q. Write down the coordinates of Q.
- 15.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
