- 1.Which expression means 'add 3 to n, then multiply the result by 4'?
- 2.A table shows values of y = x² − x − 6 for x from −3 to 4: at x = −3, y = 6; x = −2, y = 0; x = −1, y = −4; x = 0, y = −6; x = 1, y = −6; x = 2, y = −4; x = 3, y = 0; x = 4, y = 6. Using the table, write down the two roots of x² − x − 6 = 0.y = x²
- 3.The area of a circle is given by the formula A = πr², where r is the radius. Rearrange the formula to make r the subject.
- 4.Factorise x² − 64.
- 5.Leo is three times as old as his brother. His brother is x years old. Write down an expression for Leo's age.
- 6.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 0, 1, 2, 3 and the outputs are y = 4, 7, 10, 13. Work out the output when x = 5.
- 7.Which of these equations describes a vertical line?
- 8.A student says that 5(x + 2) is equivalent to 5x + 2. Which statement explains why the student is wrong?
- 9.A ferry's distance-time graph is a straight line from (0 minutes, 0 km) to (25 minutes, 15 km). Work out the ferry's speed in kilometres per hour.
- 10.A parcel delivery company's cost graph shows the following: the cost is a flat £5 for parcels weighing up to 2 kg, and then rises by £2 for each additional kg above 2 kg. Use the graph to work out the weight of a parcel that costs £17.
- 11.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 12.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 13.A cyclist's distance-time graph shows the following: she travels 12 km in the first 30 minutes at a steady speed, then rests for 30 minutes, then travels a further 8 km in the next 15 minutes. Work out her average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 14.A pattern is made from tiles. Pattern 1 has 7 tiles, pattern 2 has 11 tiles, pattern 3 has 15 tiles, and pattern 4 has 19 tiles, with each new pattern having 4 more tiles than the one before it. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of tiles in pattern n.
