- 1.a = 2 and b = 5. Work out the value of ab².
- 2.p = 4. Work out the value of 2p³.
- 3.The graph of y = x² − 7x + 2 crosses the x-axis at two points. One root, read from the graph, is approximately x = 0.30. Using the fact that the sum of the two roots of x² − 7x + 2 = 0 is 7, estimate the other root, correct to 2 decimal places.y = x² − 7x + 2
- 4.A quadratic graph has roots at x = −3 and x = 5, and it crosses the y-axis at (0, −15). Work out the equation of the curve in the form y = (x − a)(x − b).
- 5.Solve x² = 49.
- 6.A formula is F = 4s. A pupil says that when s = 5 the value of F is 9, because they added 4 and 5 instead of multiplying. Work out the correct value of F when s = 5.
- 7.A number machine multiplies its input by 3. The output is 15. Work out the input.
- 8.Solve (2x + 1)/3 = 5
- 9.Make c the subject of the formula k = 6c.
- 10.The graph of y = x² + 2x − 15 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² + 2x − 15
- 11.A ferry's distance-time graph is a straight line from (0 minutes, 0 km) to (25 minutes, 15 km). Work out the ferry's speed in kilometres per hour.
- 12.Which of these is an equation, rather than an expression, a formula or an identity?
- 13.Write down the expression that means the same as 'subtract 5 from n, then divide the result by 2'.
- 14.A tank already contains some water and is then filled at a constant rate. After 2 minutes it contains 50 litres in total; after 7 minutes it contains 150 litres in total. Work out the rate at which water is added, in litres per minute.
- 15.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
