- 1.Write down the expression that means the same as 3 × y × y.
- 2.A zip-line runs from a platform 25 m high to a landing point 5 m high, over a horizontal distance of 40 m. Work out the gradient of the zip-line.
- 3.y = 5x − 1. Work out the value of y when x = 3.y = 5x − 1
- 4.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 5.Given that (x + 2)(x − 7) = 0, write down the two solutions of x.
- 6.Which of these is a formula?
- 7.The height, h metres, of a ball t seconds after a stopwatch is started follows h = (t − 1)(5 − t) for 1 ≤ t ≤ 5, where h = 0 means the ball is at ground level. Work out the two times at which the ball is at ground level.
- 8.Meera writes the statement 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12. Which of these correctly describes what she has written, with a reason?
- 9.A printer starts a job with 480 sheets of paper loaded and prints at a steady rate. The number of sheets left, S, after t minutes is given by S = 480 − 24t. Work out how many minutes it takes for the paper to run out completely.
- 10.Two numbers have a sum of 50. The larger number is twice the smaller number. Work out the smaller number.
- 11.Solve 4x + 3 = 19
- 12.The first five terms of a sequence are 6, 10, 14, 18, 22. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 13.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 1, where n is the position number. Work out how much bigger the 5th term is than the 4th term.
- 14.Which of these is a term, rather than a whole expression, an equation, or a formula?
- 15.Work out the value of 5a + 2 when a = 3
