- 2.Solve 2x² = 18.
- 3.Solve 5x² − 15x = 0.
- 4.A conversion graph shows that 5 miles is equivalent to 8 kilometres. Use this to work out how many kilometres are equivalent to 20 miles.
- 5.A company's profit is £500 in its first year. Each year after that, the profit is £300 more than the year before. Work out the profit in the company's 6th year.
- 6.Sophie's mother is 34 years old. In x years' time she will be 50 years old. Work out the value of x.
- 7.A straight line passes through the points (−1, 2) and (3, 14). Work out the equation of the line.
- 8.A cinema sells adult tickets and child tickets. On one evening, 40 tickets are sold in total. There are 8 more adult tickets sold than child tickets. Work out the number of child tickets sold.
- 9.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 10.The formula for the area of a trapezium is A = (a + b)h / 2, where a and b are the parallel side lengths and h is the height. Make h the subject of the formula.
- 11.A rectangle has width x cm. Its length is 3 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 38 cm. Form an equation and solve it to find x.
- 12.A table of values is being drawn for the graph of y = x³. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x
- 13.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 14.The formula y = x² + 1 gives y in terms of x. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x² + 1
- 15.A tree is 2 metres tall. Each year its height increases by 10% of its height at the start of that year. Work out the height of the tree after 3 years, giving your answer to 1 decimal place.
