- 1.A cylinder has a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the volume of the cylinder.
- 2.A car's windscreen wiper blade is 40 cm long and sweeps through an angle of 110° as it wipes the glass. Using π = 3.14, work out the area of glass it wipes, to the nearest cm².
- 3.A sector of a circle has radius 6 cm and an arc length of 15.7 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the angle of the sector.
- 4.A trapezium has parallel sides of 5.6 cm and 8.4 cm, and a perpendicular height of 4 cm. Work out the area of the trapezium.
- 5.A survey team measures the angle between two fences with a protractor and gets a reading of 254°. What type of angle is this?
- 6.Two angles lie on a straight line. One angle is 37°. Work out the size of the other angle.
- 7.A party hat is in the shape of a cone with a base radius of 6 cm and a slant height of 10 cm. Work out the curved surface area of the party hat. Use π = 3.14 and the formula curved surface area = πrl.
- 8.A garden flower bed is in the shape of a trapezium. Its two parallel edges are 3.5 m and 6.5 m long, and the perpendicular distance between them is 4 m. Bedding plants cost £2.50 per square metre to cover the bed. Work out the total cost of the bedding plants.
- 9.The top of a clock tower is 25 m above level ground. Oliver stands on the ground 25 m from the foot of the tower. Work out the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the point where Oliver stands.
- 10.A rectangular garden bed measures 5 m by 3 m. A semicircular flower border is attached along one of the 3 m-wide ends, on the outside of the rectangle, so that the 3 m side is the diameter of the semicircle. Work out the total perimeter of the combined shape (the two long sides, the one remaining short side, and the curved edge). Use π = 3.14.
- 11.A ship sails 12 km on a bearing of 070° from a harbour to a buoy. It then sails a further 9 km, still on a bearing of 070°, from the buoy to a lighthouse. How far is the lighthouse from the harbour, in kilometres?
- 12.The bearing of a harbour B from a ferry's position A is 260°. What is the bearing of A from B?
- 13.A robotic arm's tip starts at the point (12.5, −4.25) on a grid measured in centimetres. It moves by the vector to pick up a component, then by the vector to place it. Work out the coordinates of the tip after both moves.
- 14.A running track has a straight section and a semicircular bend. The bend is a semicircle with radius 32 m. Work out the length of the curved part of the bend, to 1 decimal place. (Use π = 3.14.)
- 15.A circular pizza base has a radius of 12 cm. Work out the area of the pizza base. Use π = 3.14.
