- 1.Postcard P is similar to postcard Q. The 6 cm side of P corresponds to the 15 cm side of Q, and the 8 cm side of P corresponds to a matching side of Q. Work out the length of that matching side of Q.
- 2.Write down how many right angles a right-angled triangle has.
- 3.A sector of a circle has radius 12 cm and angle 45°. Using π = 3.14, work out the area of the sector.
- 4.A rhombus has all four sides equal in length, but it is not a square — its angles are not all 90°. How many lines of symmetry does this rhombus have?
- 5.Compasses are opened to exactly half the length of AB, and arcs are drawn centred at A and at B, to construct the perpendicular bisector of AB. Why does this fail?
- 6.Two similar triangles have lengths in the ratio 2 : 5. The sides of the smaller triangle are 4 cm, 6 cm and 8 cm. Work out the length of the longest side of the larger triangle.
- 7.The cross-section of a tent is an isosceles triangle. The angle at the top, between the two equal sloping sides, is 62°. The other two angles are equal to each other. Work out the size of each of those two angles.
- 8.A garden shed is shaped like a triangular prism: two identical vertical triangular end walls (the gable ends), joined by a sloping rectangular roof and a vertical rectangular back wall. Looking at the shed from directly above (the plan view), what shape is seen?
- 9.A fish tank is a cuboid measuring 40 cm long, 25 cm wide and 30 cm high. Water is poured in to a depth of 20 cm. Work out the volume of water in the tank, in litres.
- 10.Work out the distance between the points (−3, 4) and (5, −2).
- 11.A pop-up canopy has two sloping supports that meet at the top. Each support makes an angle of 30° with the ground and is 6 m long. Using the exact value of cos 30°, work out the total width of the canopy's base.
- 12.A circle has a diameter of 24 cm. A sector of this circle has an angle of 90°. Using π = 3.14, work out the area of the sector.
- 13.The angle between north and a cycle path is 40°, but it is measured anticlockwise from north. What is the three-figure bearing of the cycle path?
- 14.Triangle DEF is isosceles, with DE = DF. Angle E = 58°. Work out angle F.
- 15.Work out the length of the straight line segment joining the points (2, −4) and (−3, −4).
