- 1.A circular plate has a diameter of 20 cm. Work out the area of the plate. Use π = 3.14.
- 2.A straight fence is 5 m long. Describe the shape of the region made up of every point on the ground within 2 m of any part of the fence.
- 3.A birthday cake is a cylinder of radius 10 cm and height 8 cm, with a thin ribbon fixed exactly once around the curved side, at half the height, and joined with no overlap. Work out the length of ribbon needed. Use π = 3.14.
- 4.Two metal window frames are checked before installation. Frame A has edges of 40 cm and 65 cm, with a marked angle of 35° at the far end of the 65 cm edge, away from where the two given edges meet. Frame B has matching edges of 40 cm and 65 cm, with a matching 35° angle in the same position. The fitter wants to know if these measurements alone guarantee the two frames are congruent. What should the fitter be told?
- 5.A sprinkler waters a sector-shaped patch of a garden with radius 8 m and angle 90°. Work out the perimeter of the watered sector, to 1 decimal place. (Use π = 3.14.)
- 6.A garden shed is shaped like a triangular prism: two identical vertical triangular end walls (the gable ends), joined by a sloping rectangular roof and a vertical rectangular back wall. Looking at the shed from directly above (the plan view), what shape is seen?
- 7.A ship's radio can be heard up to 30 km from the ship. A lighthouse's light can be seen up to 20 km from the lighthouse. The ship and the lighthouse are 40 km apart along the coast. Describe the region where BOTH the radio can be heard AND the light can be seen.
- 8.A map has a scale of 1 : 25000. A distance between two points measures 2 cm on the map. What is the real distance, in kilometres?
- 9.A train leaves Leeds at 08:47 and arrives in London at 11:05. Work out how long the journey takes.
- 10.In a right-angled triangle, the two shorter sides are a and b, and the hypotenuse is c. Write down the correct statement of Pythagoras' theorem.
- 11.A photocopier enlarges a document so that every length is multiplied by the same scale factor. A line on the original document is 3.2 cm long, and the same line measures 11.2 cm on the enlarged copy. A second line on the original document is 2.5 cm long. Work out the length of the second line on the enlarged copy, giving your answer to 2 decimal places.
- 12.Two straight lines PQ and RS cross at point O. Angle POR = 52°. Work out angle QOS.
- 13.A scale drawing of a bridge uses a scale of 1 : 25. A support beam on the drawing measures 4.4 cm. What is the real length of the beam, in metres?
- 14.A scale model of a bridge is built so that 2 cm on the model represents 5 m of the real bridge. The real bridge is 45 m long. Work out the length of the model bridge, in centimetres.
- 15.A circle is drawn on a page. Write down how many radii can be drawn in the circle.
