- 1.A tangent to a circle with centre O touches the circle at point P, where OP = 5 cm. Point Q lies on the tangent so that PQ = 12 cm. Using the fact that a tangent is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact, work out the length OQ.
- 2.The column vector r has top number 2 and bottom number 6. Which of these column vectors is parallel to r?
- 3.A circle has two straight radii drawn from the centre to the edge, together with the arc between them. Write down the name of the region enclosed by these two radii and the arc.
- 4.A straight line crosses two parallel lines. An angle of 65° is formed at one crossing. At the other crossing, the angle that lies between the two parallel lines on the opposite side of the crossing line is also 65°. Write down the angle fact that explains why these two angles are equal.
- 5.A rectangular gate is braced with a diagonal strut. The gate is 1.2 m wide and 0.9 m tall. Work out the exact length of the diagonal strut.
- 6.A trundle wheel has a diameter of 0.5 m. It is rolled along the ground and makes 20 complete turns. Using π = 3.14, work out the total distance rolled, in metres.
- 7.e is the column vector with top number 5 and bottom number k. f is the column vector with top number 15 and bottom number 6. Given that f is 3 times e, work out the value of k.
- 8.A solid pyramid has a square base of side 6 cm. Its apex is directly above the centre of the base, at a vertical height of 8 cm. Work out the volume of the pyramid.
- 9.Triangle ABC is similar to triangle PQR. Side AB is 8 cm and corresponds to side PQ, which is 12 cm. Side AC is 6 cm and corresponds to side PR. Work out the length of PR.
- 10.A rectangular photograph has an area of 96 cm². One of its sides is 8 cm long. Work out the length of the other side.
- 11.In a right-angled triangle, θ is one of the acute angles. Write down the trigonometric ratio, in terms of the opposite and adjacent sides, that is used to find θ.
- 12.A path goes from A(1, 1) to B(1, 5), then from B to C(6, 5). Work out the total length of the path from A to C.
- 13.A treasure map has a scale of 1 cm to 4 m. A path from the start to a rock is drawn as two straight sections, measuring 3 cm and 2.5 cm. Work out the total real distance from the start to the rock, in metres.
- 14.A sprinkler waters a sector-shaped patch of a garden with radius 8 m and angle 90°. Work out the perimeter of the watered sector, to 1 decimal place. (Use π = 3.14.)
- 15.Write down the exact value of cos 45°.
