- 1.A bag holds 5 different sweets. Noah takes 2 of the sweets out of the bag together, so the order in which he takes them does not matter. Work out how many different pairs of sweets he could take.
- 2.Josh buys 7 pencils at 85p each. He pays with a £10 note. Work out his change.
- 3.The diameter of an artificial silk fibre is 4 × 10⁻⁶ metres. One nanometre is 10⁻⁹ metres. Work out the diameter of the fibre in nanometres.
- 4.Leah measures the length of her classroom with a tape measure marked in centimetres. She writes the length down as 7.3157 m. Give a reason why this is not an appropriate degree of accuracy.
- 5.A carton of orange juice holds 1.35 litres. Ruby pours the juice equally into 4 identical glasses. Work out how much juice is in each glass, giving your answer as a fraction of a litre in its simplest form.
- 6.The density of a type of plastic is 0.9 g/cm³. Work out this density in kg/m³.
- 7.A piece of ribbon is 2.4 metres long. Kim cuts 40 cm from it. Work out the length of ribbon left, in millimetres.
- 8.Write 260,000 in standard form.
- 9.3.4 × 10⁵ is written as an ordinary number. Work out this number.
- 10.A red blood cell has a diameter of about 7 × 10⁻⁶ metres. A virus has a diameter about 100 times smaller. Work out the diameter of the virus. Give your answer in standard form.
- 11.A jumper is reduced by 15% in a sale to a price of £42.50. Work out the original price.
- 12.A charity raffle sells 240 tickets at £1.85 each. 40% of the money raised is given to a local hospital. Work out how much money the hospital receives.
- 13.A cheetah runs at a steady speed of 25 metres per second. Work out this speed in kilometres per hour.
- 14.A café offers 3 types of soup and 4 types of bread roll. Work out how many different combinations of one soup and one bread roll are possible.
- 15.2/3 of an amount of money is £30. Work out the amount.
