- 1.A van has a mass of 2,000 kg, correct to 1 significant figure. Using m for the mass of the van in kilograms, write down the error interval for m.
- 2.A cyclist rides at a steady speed of 8 metres per second. Work out this speed in kilometres per hour.
- 3.A charity trek covers 830 miles over roughly 19 days. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of miles walked per day.
- 4.A car is hired from 10:00 on Monday until 16:00 on Thursday. Work out the total length of the hire, in hours.
- 5.A photograph uses 4 × 10⁶ bytes of storage. A memory card holds 3.2 × 10¹⁰ bytes. Work out how many of these photographs the card can hold. Give your answer in standard form.
- 6.A plane flies 2340 km at an average speed of 780 km/h. It departs at 08:20. Work out the arrival time, using the 24-hour clock.
- 7.Work out (3 × 10²) × (2 × 10⁵). Give your answer in standard form.
- 8.The thickness of a sheet of card is 0.02384 cm. Write this thickness correct to 2 significant figures.
- 9.Two-digit numbers are made using the digits 1, 2, 3 and 4, and no digit may be used twice in the same number. Work out how many different two-digit numbers can be made.
- 10.A jug holds 1.8 litres of juice. Priya pours out 3/4 of a litre to fill a glass. Work out how much juice is left in the jug, in millilitres.
- 11.Work out 10% of 30% of £200.
- 12.3.4 × 10⁵ is written as an ordinary number. Work out this number.
- 13.A shelf is 60 cm long, correct to the nearest 10 cm. Write down the upper bound for the length of the shelf, in centimetres.
- 14.A digital timer truncates every time to 1 decimal place. It shows a swimmer's time for one length as 12.3 seconds. Using t for the swimmer's actual time in seconds, write down the error interval for t.
- 15.A train leaves Leeds at 14:35. The journey takes 1 hour 50 minutes. Work out the time the train arrives. Give your answer using the 24-hour clock.
