- 1.Using only 20p coins and 10p coins, and at least one of each, work out how many different ways there are to make exactly 60p. List the possibilities systematically.
- 2.A red blood cell has a diameter of about 7 × 10⁻⁶ metres. A virus has a diameter about 100 times smaller. Work out the diameter of the virus. Give your answer in standard form.
- 3.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £45 and then £28 for each hour she works. She is at a house from 09:15 until 12:45. Work out the total charge.
- 4.A plane flies 2340 km at an average speed of 780 km/h. It departs at 08:20. Work out the arrival time, using the 24-hour clock.
- 5.The number of visitors to a museum on Saturday is given as 1,800, correct to the nearest 100. Which of these could not be the actual number of visitors?
- 6.A washing machine costs £320 before VAT. VAT is charged at 20%. Work out the total price including VAT.
- 7.A bag holds 5 different sweets. Noah takes 2 of the sweets out of the bag together, so the order in which he takes them does not matter. Work out how many different pairs of sweets he could take.
- 8.A water tank holds 80 litres when full. It currently contains 60 litres. Work out what fraction of the tank is empty.
- 9.A circle has a radius of 3 cm. Which of these is the exact area of the circle?
- 10.The distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,000 km. Write this distance in standard form, in kilometres.
- 11.A speed camera measures a car's speed as 34 mph, correct to the nearest mph. Work out the smallest possible actual speed of the car, in mph.
- 12.A quantity surveyor calculates a length as 24.6851 m. Round this length to 2 decimal places.
- 13.A charity raises 8 × 10⁶ pounds. This total is shared equally among 2 × 10² local projects. Work out how much each project receives, in standard form.
- 14.Work out (5 × 10⁴) ÷ (2 × 10⁻²). Give your answer in standard form.
- 15.A charity trek covers 830 miles over roughly 19 days. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of miles walked per day.
