- 1.A car travels 180 km using 6 litres of fuel. Work out the car's fuel consumption in kilometres per litre, then work out how many kilometres it can travel on a full tank of 12 litres at this rate.
- 2.A market trader buys 8 melons at £1.35 each. He sells all of them for a total of £15.60. Work out his profit.
- 3.A quantity surveyor calculates a length as 24.6851 m. Round this length to 2 decimal places.
- 4.Four locations each record a temperature one winter morning. Which of these temperatures is the coldest?
- 5.A cinema has 250 seats. 12% of the seats are reserved. Work out how many of the seats are reserved.
- 6.A plank of wood is 5 1/4 m long. Pieces of length 3/4 m are cut from it. Work out how many complete pieces of 3/4 m can be cut from the plank.
- 7.A charity trek covers 830 miles over roughly 19 days. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of miles walked per day.
- 8.A bag holds 5 different sweets. Noah takes 2 of the sweets out of the bag together, so the order in which he takes them does not matter. Work out how many different pairs of sweets he could take.
- 9.A tin of soup has a mass of 450 g. A bag of potatoes has a mass of 2.6 kg. Work out the total mass, in kilograms.
- 10.Two fair six-sided dice are rolled and their scores are added together. By listing the possible totals systematically, work out how many different totals are possible.
- 11.Work out (5 × 10⁴) ÷ (2 × 10⁻²). Give your answer in standard form.
- 12.Work out (6 × 10⁷) + (3 × 10⁶). Give your answer in standard form.
- 13.A jumper is reduced by 15% in a sale to a price of £42.50. Work out the original price.
- 14.A block of butter has a mass of 250 g, correct to the nearest 10 g. Using m for the mass of the block in grams, write down the error interval for m.
- 15.Four friends share a restaurant bill of £53.90 equally. A calculator gives each share as 13.475. Work out how much each friend should pay.
