- 1.A café sells ice cream in three flavours: vanilla, mango and pistachio. Isla buys a cone with two scoops, using two different flavours, one for the bottom scoop and one for the top scoop. Work out how many different cones she could buy.
- 2.A restaurant adds a service charge of 15% to a bill of £120. Work out the service charge.
- 3.3.4 × 10⁵ is written as an ordinary number. Work out this number.
- 4.A newspaper reports that 48,000 people attended a festival. The figure is correct to the nearest thousand. Which statement about the number of people who attended must be true?
- 5.In a youth club the number of girls is 2/3 of the number of boys. What fraction of the members of the club are girls?
- 6.For any two whole numbers, the product of the numbers is equal to the product of their highest common factor and their lowest common multiple. The highest common factor of 6 and 8 is 2, and 6 × 8 = 48. Work out the lowest common multiple of 6 and 8.
- 7.Work out √25 + 4² − 12 ÷ 3
- 8.A quarter-circle has a radius of 6 cm. Work out the exact perimeter of the quarter-circle, giving your answer in terms of π.
- 9.Estimate the value of √45, giving your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 10.A café is planning its lunch menu. It will offer one soup from 3 choices and one sandwich from 4 choices, but the mushroom soup, one of the 3 soups, will only be served with the cheese sandwich, one of the 4 sandwiches, on a normal day. Work out how many different soup-and-sandwich combinations are available on a normal day.
- 11.A number, n, is equal to 3.7 when rounded to 1 decimal place. Write down the error interval for n.
- 12.A circle has a diameter of 10 cm. Work out the exact circumference of the circle, in terms of π.
- 13.A roll of ribbon is 8.4 m long. Ribbon is cut into pieces that are each 0.6 m long. Work out how many complete pieces can be cut from the roll.
- 14.Work out 2/3 × 3/4 exactly, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 15.A number, x, is truncated (not rounded) to 1 decimal place and the result is 6.2. Write down the error interval for x.
