- 1.Work out 1/2 of 1/4 of 80.
- 2.At midday the temperature in the Lake District was 3 °C. By midnight it had fallen to −6 °C. Work out the fall in temperature.
- 3.In a car park the ratio of vans to cars is 2 : 7. Work out the number of vans as a fraction of the number of cars.
- 4.Work out (2/3)² + (1/2)². Give your answer as a fraction.
- 5.A rectangular tile measures 45 cm by 0.6 m. Work out its area, in square centimetres.
- 6.Write down a prime number between 30 and 40.
- 7.A rectangular field measures 19.6 m by 48.3 m. Work out an estimate for the area of the field, by rounding each length to 1 significant figure.
- 8.A box holds 140 pens. 25% of the pens are red. Work out how many of the pens are red.
- 9.Amelia estimates 48 × 21 by working out 50 × 20 = 1,000. Work out whether her estimate is an under-estimate or an over-estimate, and by how much.
- 10.Two bags of mixed nuts are combined. Bag A has peanuts and cashews in the ratio 2 : 3. Bag B has peanuts and cashews in the ratio 1 : 4. Both bags contain the same total number of nuts. Work out the fraction of the combined mixture that is peanuts.
- 11.Write 0.45 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 12.Grace drinks 1/3 of a bottle of water in the morning and another 1/3 of the same bottle in the afternoon. Work out what fraction of the bottle she has drunk altogether.
- 13.Write 45,000 in standard form.
- 14.A tank contains 120 litres of water. Water is drained out at a rate of 8 litres per minute for 6 minutes, and then a hose adds 15 litres. Work out how much water is left in the tank.
