- 1.Two fair six-sided dice are rolled and their scores are added together. By listing the possible totals systematically, work out how many different totals are possible.
- 2.The diameter of an artificial silk fibre is 4 × 10⁻⁶ metres. One nanometre is 10⁻⁹ metres. Work out the diameter of the fibre in nanometres.
- 3.A school orders 187 packed lunches for a trip. Each packed lunch costs £4.85. The school has £900 to spend. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the total cost and decide whether £900 is enough.
- 4.The mass of a radioactive sample, in grams, n years after it was first weighed is modelled by M = 200 × (1/2)ⁿ. Work out the mass the model gives after 3 years.
- 5.Two bags of mixed nuts are combined. Bag A has peanuts and cashews in the ratio 2 : 3. Bag B has peanuts and cashews in the ratio 1 : 4. Both bags contain the same total number of nuts. Work out the fraction of the combined mixture that is peanuts.
- 6.Simplify (y³)⁴, giving your answer as a single power of y.
- 7.A recipe uses 160 g of flour. Sam wants to increase the amount by 1/4. Work out the new amount of flour.
- 8.A digital timer truncates every time to 1 decimal place. It shows a swimmer's time for one length as 12.3 seconds. Using t for the swimmer's actual time in seconds, write down the error interval for t.
- 9.Maya buys 4 plants at £3.20 each and a bag of compost for £6.75. She pays with a £20 note. Work out her change.
- 10.In standard form, 2,000 is written as 2 × 10ⁿ. Write down the value of n.
- 11.A jug holds 1.25 litres of water. Ella pours in another 400 ml. Work out the total volume, in litres.
- 12.3.4 × 10⁵ is written as an ordinary number. Work out this number.
- 13.A van has a mass of 2,000 kg, correct to 1 significant figure. Using m for the mass of the van in kilograms, write down the error interval for m.
- 14.Write 0.25 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 15.Four locations each record a temperature one winter morning. Which of these temperatures is the coldest?
