- 1.Grace buys three items costing £9.95, £19.90 and £4.99. Work out an estimate for the total cost, by rounding each price to the nearest pound.
- 2.In standard form, 2,000 is written as 2 × 10ⁿ. Write down the value of n.
- 3.Work out (−2)³ + (−3)² − (−4)
- 4.A number, y, is equal to 8.2 when rounded to 1 decimal place. Write down the error interval for y.
- 5.A café is planning its lunch menu. It will offer one soup from 3 choices and one sandwich from 4 choices, but the mushroom soup, one of the 3 soups, will only be served with the cheese sandwich, one of the 4 sandwiches, on a normal day. Work out how many different soup-and-sandwich combinations are available on a normal day.
- 6.Work out an estimate for 397 ÷ 21, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 7.Tickets for a fairground ride are sold in packs of 6. Tokens for the dodgems are sold in packs of 10. Yusuf wants to buy the smallest number of packs of each so that he ends up with the same number of ride tickets as dodgem tokens. Work out how many ride tickets that is.
- 8.A gym increases its membership price by 1/5. The original price is £60. Work out the new price.
- 9.Work out the value of √(16 + 9)
- 10.A train journey takes 45 minutes, correct to the nearest 5 minutes. Using t for the actual time of the journey in minutes, write down the error interval for t.
- 11.Work out an estimate for 2.9² + 3.1², by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 12.Round 0.006482 to 2 significant figures.
- 13.A garden has flowers, herbs and vegetables in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4. What fraction of the garden is not vegetables?
- 14.Work out an estimate for 8,900 ÷ 29, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 15.A pack contains 20 stickers. Noah gives 1/5 of the pack to his sister. Work out how many stickers he gives away.
