- 1.The mass of a radioactive sample, in grams, n years after it was first weighed is modelled by M = 200 × (1/2)ⁿ. Work out the mass the model gives after 3 years.
- 2.In a chess club, 3/8 of the members are girls and the rest are boys. Write down the ratio of girls to boys.
- 3.Work out an estimate for 2.9² + 3.1², by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 4.A bag holds 50 counters. 2/5 of them are red and the rest are blue. 5 red counters are then taken out of the bag. Work out the new ratio of red counters to blue counters. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 5.3.4 × 10⁵ is written as an ordinary number. Work out this number.
- 6.Work out (4 × 10⁻³) × (2 × 10⁵). Give your answer in standard form.
- 7.A roll of ribbon is 8.4 m long. Ribbon is cut into pieces that are each 0.6 m long. Work out how many complete pieces can be cut from the roll.
- 8.A newspaper reports that 48,000 people attended a festival. The figure is correct to the nearest thousand. Which statement about the number of people who attended must be true?
- 9.A space probe is 7.5 × 10⁸ km from Earth. Write this distance as an ordinary number.
- 10.Work out (−2/5) × (−10/3). Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 11.Put these three numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest: 3/8, 0.4, 0.35
- 12.Work out √144 − 2 × 3 + √25
- 13.On one night in Manchester the temperature at 3 am was 8 °C below zero and at 9 am it was 3 °C below zero. Write down the warmer of the two readings.
- 14.£60 is shared between Amir, Bo and Chen in the ratio 1:2:3. Work out the fraction of the £60 that Amir and Bo receive together.
- 15.Put these numbers in order, starting with the smallest: 3.2 × 10⁴, 2.9 × 10⁵, 4.1 × 10³
