- 1.A train company runs 25 trains a day, every day. The probability that any one train is late is 0.08. Work out how many late trains the company should expect over a period of 4 weeks.
- 2.120 people took a driving theory test. A frequency tree records the results. The first pair of branches splits the 120 people into 70 men and 50 women. On the men's branch, 45 passed and the rest failed. On the women's branch, 38 passed and the rest failed. Work out how many of the 120 people failed the test.
- 3.A library recorded loans for 250 books over a week, using a frequency tree. The first branch splits the books into 160 fiction and 90 non-fiction. Of the fiction books, 112 were returned on time and the rest were returned late. All the non-fiction books were returned on time. Work out the probability that a book, chosen at random from the 250, was returned late. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 4.Four bags each contain counters, some of which are winning counters. The probability of taking a winning counter is 5/12 from the red bag, 3/8 from the blue bag, 7/24 from the green bag and 1/3 from the yellow bag. Work out which bag has the smallest probability of giving a winning counter.
- 5.The probability that the Hughes family go away during the summer holidays is 3/7. Work out the probability that they do not go away during the summer holidays.
- 6.Oliver flips three fair coins at the same time. Work out the probability that exactly two of the three coins land on heads.
- 7.A clinic recorded 300 booked appointments using a frequency tree. The first branch splits them into 210 adult appointments and the rest child appointments. Of the adult appointments, 189 were attended and the rest were missed. Of the child appointments, 81 were attended. Work out the probability that a booked appointment, chosen at random from the 300, was missed. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 8.A charity bake sale tracked 240 items sold using a frequency tree. The first branch splits sales into 150 cake sales and 90 biscuit sales. Of the cake sales, 100 were bought by adults and the rest by children. Of the biscuit sales, 54 were bought by children. Each item sold for £1.20. - 10.A seed company tests germination using results from three greenhouses. Greenhouse 1 plants 200 seeds and 172 germinate. Greenhouse 2 plants 150 seeds and 126 germinate. Greenhouse 3 plants 250 seeds and 212 germinate. Using the combined results from all three greenhouses, work out the best estimate of the number of seeds, out of a new batch of 4000 seeds, that would be expected to germinate.
- 11.Two games are offered at a school fair, and every one of the 40 pupils in a class plays each game once. In Game A, the probability of winning a prize is 0.2 and the prize is worth £5. In Game B, the probability of winning a prize is 0.1 and the prize is worth £12. Work out which game gives a higher expected total value of prizes for the class, and by how much.
- 12.A fair six-sided dice is rolled once. Work out the probability that the score is greater than 4.
