- 1.Two ordinary fair dice are rolled and the two scores are multiplied together. Work out the probability that the product is odd.
- 2.Spinner P and Spinner Q are each fair and have 5 equal sections, numbered 1 to 5. Both spinners are spun once, and every outcome is listed as an ordered pair, Spinner P then Spinner Q, such as (2, 4). Work out how many of the outcomes have the score on Spinner P less than the score on Spinner Q.
- 3.A fair six-sided dice is rolled once. Write down the probability that the score is an even number.
- 4.A sorting office processes 2,000 letters addressed to one postcode area in a week. The probability that a letter is a bill is 0.15. Work out how many of the letters you would expect to be bills.
- 5.The probability that Ben catches his bus on time is 0.8. The probability that Freya catches her bus on time is 0.5. The two events are independent. Work out the probability that both Ben and Freya catch their bus on time.
- 6.A four-colour spinner (red, blue, green, yellow) is spun repeatedly, and the relative frequency of landing on green is recorded as the number of spins increases: after 20 spins it is 0.350; after 200 spins it is 0.290; after 2000 spins it is 0.251. Using the result from 2000 spins as the best estimate of the probability, work out the number of times the spinner would be expected to land on green in a further 3000 spins.
- 7.Priya and Ben each want to estimate the probability that a coin lands on heads. Priya flips the coin 50 times and works out her relative frequency. Ben flips the same coin 500 times and works out his relative frequency. Whose relative frequency is more likely to be close to the true probability? Give a reason for your answer.
- 8.The probability that Oliver's train is delayed on any morning is 0.3. Work out the probability that his train is not delayed.
- 9.On Amelia's walk to school there are two sets of traffic lights. The probability that the first set is green when she reaches it is 0.4. The probability that the second set is green when she reaches it is 0.5. The two sets work independently of each other. Work out the probability that both sets are green.
- 10.A drawer contains 4 red socks and 2 blue socks. Two socks are taken out at random, one after the other, without the first being put back. Work out the probability that both socks are the same colour.
- 11.The numbers 1 to 10 are each written on a card. Set A is the set of multiples of 3 from 1 to 10 and set B is the set of even numbers from 1 to 10. Work out how many of the numbers from 1 to 10 are in set A but not in set B.
- 12.80 people are asked whether they drink tea and whether they drink coffee, and the results are recorded on a frequency tree. The first pair of branches splits the 80 people into 50 tea drinkers and 30 non-tea-drinkers. Of the 50 tea drinkers, 32 also drink coffee. Of the 30 non-tea-drinkers, 6 drink coffee. Work out n(T ∩ C), the number of people who drink both tea and coffee.
- 13.At a youth club, 65 members are asked which sports they play. 27 play football, 21 play basketball, and 9 play both. Work out the number of members who play neither sport.
- 14.A red fair dice and a blue fair dice are rolled together. Every outcome is listed as an ordered pair, red score then blue score. Work out the probability that the red score is less than the blue score.
- 15.A fair spinner has 10 equal sections, numbered 1 to 10. The spinner is spun 150 times. Work out how many times you would expect it to land on a number greater than 7.
