- 2.A factory finds that the probability a randomly chosen light bulb is defective is 0.035. In a batch of 4,000 bulbs, work out how many bulbs you would expect to work correctly.
- 3.One card is taken at random from an ordinary pack of 52 playing cards. 26 of the cards are red. Work out the probability that the card is red. Give your answer as a percentage.
- 4.In Manchester the probability of rain on any day in November is taken to be 0.3, and whether it rains on one day is independent of whether it rains on the next. Work out the probability that it rains on both the 10th and the 11th of November.
- 5.Leo flips a fair coin twice. He makes a list of every possible result of the two flips, writing down what the first flip lands on and then what the second flip lands on. Work out how many of the results in his list contain at least one tail.
- 6.A two-way table records how 80 students travel to school. 45 of the students are boys and the rest are girls. 27 of the boys walk to school. Work out the probability, as a fraction, that a student chosen at random from the boys walks to school.
- 7.Spinner C has 3 equal sections, numbered 2, 3 and 5. Spinner D has 6 equal sections, numbered 1 to 6. Both spinners are spun once, and the two numbers are multiplied together. Work out the probability that the product is a multiple of 5.
- 8.A raffle at a school fair sells 500 tickets. Mia buys 25 of the tickets. One ticket is drawn at random to win the prize. Work out the probability that Mia wins the raffle. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 9.At a gym, 70 members are asked whether they use the pool or the sauna. 38 use the pool, 30 use the sauna, and 12 use neither. Work out n(P ∩ S), the number of members who use both the pool and the sauna.
- 10.A market research company found that, out of 120 shoppers surveyed, 42 preferred paper bags to plastic bags. A supermarket expects 900 shoppers this week. Using this relative frequency, work out how many of the 900 shoppers would be expected to prefer paper bags.
