- 1.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 5, y = 18. Work out the value of y when x = 15.
- 2.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 4, y = 10. Work out the value of y when x = 6.
- 3.Work out the value of x when 4/x = 2/5.
- 4.A car uses fuel at a constant rate. It uses 24 litres of fuel to travel 300 km. Assuming the same rate, work out how many litres of fuel are needed for a journey of 175 km.
- 5.A recipe for pancakes uses 240 g of flour to make pancakes for 6 people. Work out how many grams of flour are needed to make pancakes for 15 people, using the same recipe.
- 6.y is directly proportional to x. When x = 2, y = 9. Which of these pairs of values is also consistent with this proportion?
- 7.It takes 8 painters 6 days to paint a fence. Working at the same rate, work out how many days 4 painters would take to paint the same fence.
- 8.6 identical taps fill a paddling pool in 20 minutes. Each tap fills at the same steady rate. Work out how long 3 of these taps would take to fill the same pool.
- 9.A spring's extension is directly proportional to the force applied to it. A force of 5 N produces an extension of 12 mm. Work out the extension produced by a force of 20 N.
- 10.A factory machine produces bottles at a constant rate. In 45 minutes it produces 810 bottles. The factory needs 2,160 bottles for an order. Working at the same rate, work out how many minutes it will take to produce the order.
- 11.Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3. The smaller number is 8. Work out the larger number.
- 12.Two numbers a and b are in the ratio a : b = 3 : 4. Given that a = 15, work out the value of b.
- 13.The exchange rate is £1 = €1.15. Convert £200 to euros.
- 14.3 kg of apples cost £6. Work out the cost of 5 kg of the same apples.
- 15.8 identical pens cost £6.40 in total. Work out the cost of 5 of the same pens.
