- 1.A river 120 km long is drawn as a line 6 cm long on a map. Work out the scale of the map.
- 2.The speed of a car is given by v = d ÷ t. A car travels 180 km in 3 hours. Work out the average speed of the car in km/h.
- 3.Two mathematically similar cylinders have volumes 64 cm³ and 216 cm³. Work out the ratio of the height of the smaller cylinder to the height of the larger cylinder, in simplest form.
- 4.A furniture designer makes a scale model of a wardrobe using a scale of 1 : 8. The real wardrobe is 2.4 m tall and 1.2 m wide. Work out the perimeter of the front face of the model wardrobe, in centimetres.
- 5.A glass holds 250 ml of squash. Work out how many of these glasses are needed to fill a 1 litre bottle.
- 6.Amelia uses 2 kg of flour to bake 5 cakes. Using the same recipe, work out how many cakes she can bake with 6 kg of flour.
- 7.Two mathematically similar cubes have edge lengths 2 cm and 6 cm. Write the ratio of the volume of the smaller cube to the volume of the larger cube in its simplest form.
- 8.The ratio of two lengths is 0.6 : 1.5. Write this ratio in its simplest whole-number form.
- 9.A model railway is built at a scale where the ratio of model length to real length is 1 : 76. Given that a real carriage is 20.6 metres long, work out the length of the model carriage in centimetres, to 1 decimal place.
- 10.The table shows values of x and y. x: 3, 5, 8. y: 12, 20, 32. Which statement correctly describes the relationship between x and y?
- 11.A rectangular room is drawn on a plan with a scale of 1 : 50. On the plan, the room measures 8 cm by 6 cm. Work out the real area of the room, in square metres.
- 12.£5000 is invested in an account paying 4% compound interest each year. Work out the total interest earned after 3 years.
- 13.Write the ratio 2 : 1/4 as a ratio of whole numbers in its simplest form.
- 14.A sofa costs £800. Its price is increased by 25%. Work out the new price of the sofa.
- 15.Three business partners share a profit of £48,000 in the ratio 3:5:4. Work out how much the partner with 5 parts receives.
