- 1.A ramp rises 3 m over a horizontal distance of 12 m. Work out the gradient of the ramp.
- 2.A garden path runs along the line 4x + y = 12. A drainage pipe must be laid perpendicular to the path, passing through the point (3, 1) where a sprinkler sits. Work out the equation of the pipe's line, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 3.A geometric sequence has first term 3 and common ratio √2. Work out the 6th term of the sequence, giving your answer in the form a√2.
- 4.The function f(x) = x² for all real values of x has no inverse function, but g(x) = x² for x ≥ 0 does have one. Which statement correctly explains this?y = x²
- 5.The point (−4, 3) lies on the circle x² + y² = 25, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (−4, 3), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 6.Factorise fully 12x² + 18x.
- 7.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation y = (2x/5) − 3.
- 8.When a number is added to its square the result is 30. Work out the possible values of the number.
- 9.A scout leader is 44 years old and one of the scouts is 16 years old. Work out how many years it will be until the leader is exactly twice as old as the scout.
- 10.(2x + 3)(x + a) ≡ 2x² + 11x + 12 is an identity. Work out the value of a.
- 11.Work out the equation of the straight line that passes through (−2, 3) and (4, −9).
- 12.A table shows y = x² − 6x + 5 at these points (x, y): (0, 5), (1, 0), (2, −3), (3, −4), (4, −3), (5, 0), (6, 5). Using the symmetry shown, write down the x-coordinate of the turning point.y = x² − 6x + 5
- 13.A sequence is defined by aₙ = aₙ₋₁ + aₙ₋₂ for n ≥ 3. Given that a₃ = 11 and a₅ = 29, work out a₁.
- 14.A water tank empties according to y = −5x + 200, where y is the number of litres left after x minutes. Work out the coordinates of the point where this graph crosses the x-axis.y = -5x + 200
- 15.Work out the coordinates of the point where the graph of y = 2x − 6 crosses the x-axis.y = 2x − 6
