- 1.Solve x² − 8x + 3 = 0 by completing the square. Give your answers in surd form.
- 2.The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2(l + w), where l is the length and w is the width. A rectangular garden has a perimeter of 46 m and a length of 14 m. Rearrange the formula to make w the subject, then work out the width of the garden.
- 3.A point has coordinates (x, y). In which two quadrants is the product x × y positive?
- 4.Ben is asked to find the inverse of f(x) = 4 − 3x. He writes f⁻¹(x) = (4 − x)/3. Which statement about Ben's answer is correct?
- 5.Which of these rules generates the sequence 6, 11, 16, 21, …?
- 6.Expand and simplify (2x − 1)(x + 5)(x − 2). Write down the coefficient of x in your answer.
- 7.A number machine multiplies its input by 2 and then subtracts 5. Work out the output when the input is 6.
- 8.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (12, 35). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 9.A cyclist's distance-time graph shows the following: she travels 12 km in the first 30 minutes at a steady speed, then rests for 30 minutes, then travels a further 8 km in the next 15 minutes. Work out her average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 10.The diagram shows two curves drawn on the same grid. Curve A is the graph of . Which equation could represent curve B?
- 11.A rectangular lawn is 4 m longer than it is wide. Its area is 96 m². Work out the length of the lawn.
- 12.A car's speed, in m/s, during a journey is: 0 at t = 0 s, 8 at t = 4 s, and 8 (constant) from t = 4 s to t = 10 s, increasing at a constant rate between t = 0 and t = 4. Estimate the total distance the car travels, using the areas of a triangle and a rectangle.
- 13.A car's velocity–time graph is a straight line from (0 s, 4 m/s) rising to (6 s, V m/s), followed by a straight line falling from (6 s, V m/s) to (9 s, 0 m/s). The gradient of the second line is −8 m/s². Work out the total distance travelled between t = 0 and t = 9 seconds.
- 14.A box holds n pencils. A shop has 6 full boxes and 4 loose pencils. All of these pencils are shared equally between 2 classes. Write down the expression for the number of pencils each class receives.
- 15.The first four terms of a sequence are 4, 9, 14, 19. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
