- 1.Work out the equation of the straight line that passes through (−2, 3) and (4, −9).
- 2.How many turning points does the graph of y = x² − 7x + 10 have?y = x² − 7x + 10
- 3.A cyclist's distance-time graph shows the following: she travels 12 km in the first 30 minutes at a steady speed, then rests for 30 minutes, then travels a further 8 km in the next 15 minutes. Work out her average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 4.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
- 5.Meera writes the statement 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12. Which of these correctly describes what she has written, with a reason?
- 6.A gardener charges a fixed fee of £15 plus £8 for each hour worked. The total charge, £T, for a job lasting h hours is given by T = 15 + 8h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 4 hours, and identify what kind of statement T = 15 + 8h is.
- 7.A number machine multiplies its input by 2 and then subtracts 5. Work out the output when the input is 6.
- 8.f(x) = x + 2 and g(x) = x². Work out the value of x for which fg(x) = gf(x).y = x + 2
- 9.The table shows the velocity, in m/s, of a train at various times, in seconds: 0 at t = 0, 20 at t = 4, 35 at t = 10, 27 at t = 14. Assuming the velocity changes at a constant rate between each pair of readings, estimate the distance the train travels between t = 0 and t = 12, using the trapezium rule.
- 10.The diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function. Which equation could it represent?
- 11.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 12.f(x) = x³ − 3x² − 4. Work out the pair of consecutive integers between which the solution of f(x) = 0 lies.y = x
- 13.The equation x² − 3x − 7 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(3xₙ + 7). The starting value is x₀ = 4, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 14.A car's speed-time graph shows the following: its speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 20 m/s over the first 10 seconds, then stays constant at 20 m/s for the next 15 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled in the first 25 seconds.
- 15.For 0 ≤ x ≤ 360, the equation sin x = 0.5 has two solutions. What are they?
