- 1.The first four terms of a sequence are 4, 9, 14, 19. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 2.A candle is 30 cm tall when lit and burns at a constant rate. After burning for 5 minutes, its height is 20 cm. The height h cm after t minutes is given by h = 30 − mt. Work out the value of m.
- 3.The graph of y = 2x² + 6x − 1 is translated by the vector (−2, 0). Work out the equation of the image, giving your answer in the form y = 2x² + bx + c.y = 2x² + 6x − 1y = 2x²
- 4.The diagram shows part of the graph of a reciprocal function of the form , passing through the labelled point. Work out the value of k.
- 5.Line P has equation y = −2x + 5 and line Q has equation 2y = x + 6. Are lines P and Q perpendicular to each other?y = -2x + 5y = x + 6
- 6.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 8. Work out the radius of the circle, giving your answer as a surd in its simplest form.
- 7.A phone company works out a monthly bill, £B, using the formula B = 18 + 0.05t, where £18 is the fixed monthly charge and t is the number of extra text messages sent beyond the free allowance, each charged at 5p. Farida's bill for one month is £24.50. Work out the number of extra text messages, t, she sent.
- 8.A geometric sequence has first term 3 and common ratio √2. Work out the 6th term of the sequence, giving your answer in the form a√2.
- 9.A company's weekly profit, P thousand pounds, when it makes x thousand items is modelled by P = x² − 8x + 12, for x ≥ 0. Work out the values of x for which the company makes a loss.
- 10.A table shows y = x² − 6x + 5 at these points (x, y): (0, 5), (1, 0), (2, −3), (3, −4), (4, −3), (5, 0), (6, 5). Using the symmetry shown, write down the x-coordinate of the turning point.y = x² − 6x + 5
- 11.A curve has equation y = x² − 9. Which statement about its graph is correct?y = x² − 9
- 12.A student attempts to prove that the product of two consecutive integers is always even: (i) Let the two consecutive integers be n and n + 1. (ii) Since n(n + 1) is even, one of n and n + 1 must be an even number. (iii) Therefore, n(n + 1) is even. At which statement does the proof first assume the very fact it is trying to prove?
- 13.Work out the value of the discriminant b² − 4ac for the equation 2x² + 3x − 2 = 0.
- 14.Simplify fully: (x + 2)/(3x) × 6x²/(x² − 4)
- 15.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 2, where n is the position number. Work out the 6th term.
