- 1.A rectangular lawn is 4 m longer than it is wide. Its area is 96 m². Work out the length of the lawn.
- 2.A rectangular sheep pen has perimeter P, length l and width w, connected by the formula P = 2l + 2w. A farmer has 60 m of fencing for the perimeter and sets the width at 8 m. Work out the length of the pen.
- 3.A photo printing service has two adverts for its price. Advert A: cost in pounds = 3(2n + 4) for n photos. Advert B: cost in pounds = 6n + 12. A customer says the two adverts always charge the same amount. Is the customer correct?
- 4.For 0 ≤ x ≤ 360, the equation sin x = 0.5 has two solutions. What are they?
- 5.Two numbers have a sum of 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. Form an equation using n for the smaller number, and solve it to find the larger number.
- 6.Line P has equation y = −2x + 5 and line Q has equation 2y = x + 6. Are lines P and Q perpendicular to each other?y = -2x + 5y = x + 6
- 7.n = 3. Work out the value of (2n)².
- 8.A quadratic graph has equation y = (x − 4)². A student says this graph crosses the x-axis at two different points. Explain why the student is wrong.
- 9.Solve the inequality 9 − 2x ≥ 1.
- 10.A car is decelerating. The tangent to its velocity-time graph at t = 12 seconds passes through the points (8, 22) and (16, 6), where velocity is in m/s and time is in seconds. Work out the gradient of this tangent, in m/s².
- 11.Describe a sequence of two transformations that maps the graph of y = x² onto the graph of y = −(x − 5)².y = x²
- 12.A car passes the 15 km marker on a road and passes the 195 km marker 3 hours later. Work out the gradient of the distance-time graph, that is the rate of change of distance with time.
- 13.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
- 14.The equation x² − 6x + k = 0 has exactly one solution. Work out the value of k.
- 15.A cycle route is 84 km long. Freya sets off along it at a steady 14 km/h. Write down the function for the distance y, in kilometres, that is still to be cycled after x hours.
