- 1.Solve x² + 3x − 10 = 0.
- 2.The area of a triangle is given by the formula A = bh/2, where b is the base and h is the height. Make h the subject of the formula.
- 3.The equation x³ − 2x − 7 = 0 has exactly one solution. It can be found using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(2xₙ + 7), with starting value x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out the solution correct to 2 decimal places, iterating until two consecutive values round to the same 2 decimal places.
- 4.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 64. Write down the radius of the circle.
- 5.A taxi fare in pounds is given by F = 2.50 + 1.20m, where m is the number of miles travelled. Sam takes a taxi for a journey of 6 miles. Work out the fare.
- 6.A runner's journey is shown on a distance-time graph: she runs 8 km in the first hour, rests for 30 minutes with no distance gained, then runs a further 4 km in the next 30 minutes. Work out her average speed for the whole journey, in kilometres per hour.
- 7.A proof sets out to show that the sum of the squares of two consecutive odd numbers, written as 2n + 1 and 2n + 3, is always 2 more than a multiple of 8. Four attempts to expand (2n + 1)² + (2n + 3)² and reach a conclusion are shown below. Which attempt correctly proves this claim?
- 8.A number, n, is tripled and then 4.5 is added. The result is 22.5. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 9.The formula for the energy stored in a stretched spring is E = (1/2)kx², where E is in joules, k is the spring constant in N/m and x is the extension in m. A spring with a spring constant of 40 N/m is stretched so that its extension is 0.3 m. Work out the energy stored in the spring.
- 10.Factorise 6x² − 7x − 3.
- 11.A market stall's cost of hiring n tables is modelled by two formulas: Formula A: C = 3(2n + 5); Formula B: C = 6n + 15, where C is in pounds. A stallholder says the two formulas always give the same cost. Work out the cost given by each formula when n = 4, and use your results to decide whether the stallholder is correct.
- 12.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 13.Kai writes the expression 8 − 3x + 5x² and says it has three terms. Ryan says it only has two terms because a number on its own is not a term. Work out the correct number of terms in the expression.
- 14.Work out the coordinates of the midpoint of the line segment joining (−3, 5) and (7, 9).
- 15.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 36. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the circle crosses the y-axis.
