- 1.A runner's journey is shown on a distance-time graph: she runs 8 km in the first hour, rests for 30 minutes with no distance gained, then runs a further 4 km in the next 30 minutes. Work out her average speed for the whole journey, in kilometres per hour.
- 2.f(x) = x³ − 3x² − 4. Work out the pair of consecutive integers between which the solution of f(x) = 0 lies.y = x
- 3.Which of these values of x is a solution of x² + 2x − 15 = 0?
- 4.A straight line passes through the points (−1, 2) and (3, 14). Work out the equation of the line.
- 5.Solve the inequality x² ≥ 16, giving your answer using set notation.
- 6.The tangent to a curve at the point (5, 2) is the line y = mx + c. This tangent crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Work out the gradient, m, of the tangent.
- 7.A tap fills a tank at a varying rate. A graph shows the rate of flow, in litres per minute, against time, in minutes. What does the area under this graph represent?
- 8.To rearrange the formula y = 3x − 8 to make x the subject, Priya writes: 'Add 8 to both sides to get y + 8 = 3x, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = y + 8 ÷ 3.' Work out the correct expression for x.y = 3x − 8
- 9.The equation x³ − 3x − 4 = 0 has a root near x = 2. Four students each try a different iterative formula, all starting from x₀ = 2: xₙ₊₁ = ∛(3xₙ + 4); xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ³ − 4) ÷ 3; xₙ₊₁ = 4 ÷ (xₙ² − 3); xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2xₙ − 4. Only one of these formulas keeps producing values that settle near the root when it is repeated. Work out x₁, correct to 3 decimal places, for the formula that does this.
- 10.A straight line has equation 4y = 12x + 20. Work out the gradient of the line.y = 12x + 20
- 11.f(x) = x³ − 3x − 20, and the equation f(x) = 0 has exactly one solution. Work out the pair of consecutive integers between which that solution lies.y = x
- 12.f(x) = 2x² + 1 and g(x) = x − 1. Work out fg(x), giving your answer in expanded form.y = 2x² + 1
- 13.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² − 10x + 30.y = x² − 10x + 30
- 14.Kai writes the expression 8 − 3x + 5x² and says it has three terms. Ryan says it only has two terms because a number on its own is not a term. Work out the correct number of terms in the expression.
- 15.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £30 plus £25 for each hour worked. The total bill for a job was £130. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
