- 1.Which of these is a formula, rather than an expression, an equation, or an identity?
- 2.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a car at times, in seconds, all 2 seconds apart: 0 at t = 0, 3 at t = 2, 8 at t = 4, 15 at t = 6, 24 at t = 8. A student uses the trapezium rule with these five readings to estimate the distance the car travels. By finding the second differences of the speed values, decide whether this trapezium estimate is an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance.
- 3.Work out the coordinates of the point halfway between (−9, −2) and (−1, −2).
- 4.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (2, −3). The graph of y = −f(x) + a has a maximum turning point at (2, 9). Work out the value of a.
- 5.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 100. A straight line is drawn from the origin through the point P(8, 9). Work out whether P lies inside, on, or outside the circle.
- 6.Expand and simplify (2x − 1)(x + 5)(x − 2). Write down the coefficient of x in your answer.
- 7.Write down the expression that means the same as 'subtract 5 from n, then divide the result by 2'.
- 8.A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (4, 11). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 9.f(x) = 2x + 1. Work out the value of x for which f⁻¹(x) = 5.y = 2x + 1
- 10.A taxi company charges a £2.50 booking fee plus £1.80 per mile. A journey costs £15.10 in total. Work out the number of miles travelled.
- 11.Simplify (x² − 9) ÷ (x² + 5x + 6).
- 12.The graph of y = mx + 6 passes through the point (−2, 0). Work out the value of m.
- 13.The simultaneous equations kx + 2y = 4 and 3x + y = 5 have no solution. Work out the value of k.
- 14.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (3, −5), crosses the x-axis at x = 1, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −2). Exactly one of these statements about the graph of y = −f(x + 2) is true. Which statement is true?
- 15.(2x + 3)(x + a) ≡ 2x² + 11x + 12 is an identity. Work out the value of a.
