- 1.A train's distance-time graph shows it travelling 100 km at a steady speed in the first 1.5 hours, waiting at a signal for 0.25 hours, then travelling a further 47 km in 0.75 hours. Work out the average speed for the whole journey, correct to 1 decimal place.
- 2.Solve 3x + 14 = 8x − 6
- 3.A school trip costs a £15 deposit plus £9 per student for the coach. The total cost for a class is £186. Work out how many students went on the trip.
- 4.Amelia's mother is three times as old as Amelia. Four years ago her mother was five times as old as Amelia was then. Work out Amelia's age now.
- 5.A cinema sells adult tickets for £10 and child tickets for £6. A family group buys 9 tickets in total, spending £74. Work out how many adult tickets were bought.
- 6.The graph of y = x² − 7x + 2 crosses the x-axis at two points. One root, read from the graph, is approximately x = 0.30. Using the fact that the sum of the two roots of x² − 7x + 2 = 0 is 7, estimate the other root, correct to 2 decimal places.y = x² − 7x + 2
- 7.Solve 7x − 5 = 3x + 11
- 8.The graph of y = f(x) has a root (an x-intercept) at x = 5. Work out the x-coordinate of the corresponding root on the graph of y = f(x + 2).
- 9.The graph of y = f(x) passes through the point (2, 7). The graph of y = f(x) + a passes through the point (2, 3). Work out the value of a.
- 10.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
- 11.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a car at times, in seconds, all 2 seconds apart: 0 at t = 0, 3 at t = 2, 8 at t = 4, 15 at t = 6, 24 at t = 8. A student uses the trapezium rule with these five readings to estimate the distance the car travels. By finding the second differences of the speed values, decide whether this trapezium estimate is an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance.
- 12.A cyclist's speed-time graph is described as follows: speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 8 m/s over the first 4 seconds, stays constant at 8 m/s for the next 6 seconds, then decreases steadily to 0 m/s over the final 2 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 13.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 12 ÷ (xₙ + 2) is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 1. Work out the value that xₙ approaches, correct to 2 decimal places.
- 14.A packet contains s sweets. The sweets are shared equally between f friends. Write an expression for the number of sweets each friend receives.
- 15.y = 5 − 2x. Work out the value of x when y = 11.
