- 1.A gardener charges a fixed fee of £15 plus £8 for each hour worked. The total charge, £T, for a job lasting h hours is given by T = 15 + 8h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 4 hours, and identify what kind of statement T = 15 + 8h is.
- 2.A square patio of side length n slabs is surrounded by a single border of square paving slabs of the same size. For a patio with side length n, the total number of slabs used for the patio and its border together is 9 when n = 1, 16 when n = 2, 25 when n = 3, and 36 when n = 4. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the total number of slabs.
- 3.The curve y = x² − 3x. Use the chord between x = 1 and x = 4 to estimate the gradient of the curve at x = 2.5.y = x² − 3x
- 4.Factorise 6x² − 7x − 3.
- 5.A tram travels between two stops. Its velocity-time graph consists of straight line segments joining the points (0, 0), (5, 20), (12, 20), (16, 4) and (20, 4), where time is in seconds and velocity is in m/s. Work out the average speed of the tram over the whole 20 seconds. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 6.Water is poured into a container at a constant rate. A graph of the depth of the water, in cm, against the time since pouring began, in minutes, is a straight line through the origin, and it passes through the point (3, 12). Use the graph to work out the depth of the water after 7 minutes.
- 7.Work out the period of the graph of y = cos x, in degrees.y = cos(x)
- 8.A curve has equation y = x³ − 4x. Work out the coordinates of the point where the curve crosses the y-axis.y = x
- 9.A model rocket's height is given by h = −5t² + 20t, where h is in metres and t is in seconds. A student says the graph of h against t is n-shaped. Which statement gives the correct verdict on the SHAPE and the reason that settles it from the equation?
- 10.The equation x² − 7 = 0 has a positive root. Let f(x) = x² − 7. Given that x₁ = 2.6 and x₂ = 2.65, work out which of these is correct.y = x² − 7
- 11.Which of these statements is an equation with exactly one solution?
- 12.Which line of algebra shows that the sum of two consecutive odd numbers is always a multiple of 4?
- 13.A rectangular garden has length (x + 7) m and width (x − 7) m. Work out an expression for the area of the garden, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 14.A rectangular vegetable plot has an area of 30 m² and its length is 4 m greater than its width, x metres. This gives x² + 4x − 30 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(30 − 4xₙ). The starting value is x₀ = 3, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃, and use it to find an estimate for the length of the plot, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 15.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² − 3, where n is the position number. Work out the difference between the 6th term and the 5th term.
