- 1.A rectangular vegetable plot has an area of 30 m² and its length is 4 m greater than its width, x metres. This gives x² + 4x − 30 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(30 − 4xₙ). The starting value is x₀ = 3, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃, and use it to find an estimate for the length of the plot, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 2.Points A(−1, 2) and B(5, 8) are the endpoints of a line segment. Work out the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AB.
- 3.A square tile has an area of 144 cm². Work out the side length of the tile.
- 4.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
- 5.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?
- 6.A curve has equation y = x² − 9. Which statement about its graph is correct?y = x² − 9
- 7.A lift has a weight limit: it must carry no more than 630 kg. Let w be the total weight, in kg, carried by the lift. Which inequality describes this?
- 8.Factorise fully 5x + 5y − 5
- 9.The diagram shows two curves drawn on the same grid. Curve A is the graph of . Which equation could represent curve B?
- 10.A ball is dropped and bounces. The height of each bounce after the first is 8 cm less than the bounce before it. The first bounce reaches 60 cm. Work out the height of the 5th bounce.
- 11.The equation 3(2x − 1) = 4x + 9 is rearranged by expanding the brackets. Which of these is the correctly expanded equation?
- 12.f(x) = x + 3 and g(x) = 2x. Work out fg(x).y = x + 3
- 13.Work out the value of (x − 4)/2 + 3 when x = 10
- 14.Which of these pairs of lines are perpendicular to each other?
- 15.The area under a speed-time graph between t = 0 and t = 6 seconds is estimated using three strips of equal width, using the speeds, in m/s, at t = 0, 2, 4 and 6: 0, 5, 9 and 12. Using the trapezium rule with these three trapezia, estimate the distance travelled.
