- 1.A line segment has one endpoint at (−6, 2) and its midpoint at (−1, 5). Work out the coordinates of the other endpoint.
- 2.A candle is 30 cm tall and burns down at a steady rate of 1 cm per hour. Write down the function for the height of the candle y, in centimetres, after x hours.
- 3.Solve 2x² = 18.
- 4.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 5.The equation x² + 2x − 5 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 5/(xₙ + 2). The starting value is x₀ = 1, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₂ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 6.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (2, −3). The graph of y = −f(x) + a has a maximum turning point at (2, 9). Work out the value of a.
- 7.Write down the expression that means the same as (x + 7) ÷ 4.
- 8.A cup of tea cools after being made. Its temperature-time graph is a curve. Three tangents are drawn on the graph: at t = 2 minutes the tangent has gradient −8; at t = 10 minutes the tangent has gradient −3; at t = 20 minutes the tangent has gradient −0.5. Which of these statements about the tea's cooling is correct?
- 9.The first four terms of a sequence are 11, 18, 25, 32. Ravi thinks the nth term is 7n. Work out the correct expression for the nth term.
- 10.The diagram shows the graph of a function. Which equation could it represent?
- 11.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 4, 8, 16, 32, ... Sequence Q: 4, 8, 12, 16, ... Sequence R: 4, 7, 12, 19, ... Sequence S: 4, 9, 16, 25, ... Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 12.A region R satisfies y ≤ x + 1, x + y ≤ 5 and y ≥ 0. Which of these correctly describes R in words?
- 13.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 64. Write down the radius of the circle.
- 14.Solve the simultaneous equations y = x + 1 and x² + y² = 25, giving both pairs of solutions.y = x + 1
- 15.The equation x² − 3x − 7 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(3xₙ + 7). The starting value is x₀ = 4, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
