- 1.Solve the simultaneous equations y = x + 1 and x² + y² = 25, giving both pairs of solutions.y = x + 1
- 2.A quadratic graph has equation y = (x − 4)². A student says this graph crosses the x-axis at two different points. Explain why the student is wrong.
- 3.The equation x³ − 5x − 3 = 0 can be rearranged to give an iterative formula of the form xₙ₊₁ = ∛(…). Work out which one of these is a correct rearrangement.
- 4.The nth term of a sequence is 2n² + 1. Work out the 4th term of the sequence.
- 5.How many turning points does the graph of y = x² − 7x + 10 have?y = x² − 7x + 10
- 6.Expand and simplify (2x − 1)(x + 5)(x − 2). Write down the coefficient of x in your answer.
- 7.The diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function. Which equation could it represent?
- 8.The table shows the velocity, in m/s, of a train at various times, in seconds: 0 at t = 0, 20 at t = 4, 35 at t = 10, 27 at t = 14. Assuming the velocity changes at a constant rate between each pair of readings, estimate the distance the train travels between t = 0 and t = 12, using the trapezium rule.
- 9.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
- 10.Solve the simultaneous equations y = 2x − 1 and y = x² − x − 1, giving both pairs of solutions.y = 2x − 1y = x²
- 11.A distance-time graph is a straight line from (0, 0) to (4, 100), where time is in hours and distance is in kilometres. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 12.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 36. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the circle crosses the y-axis.
- 13.A company's profit is £500 in its first year. Each year after that, the profit is £300 more than the year before. Work out the profit in the company's 6th year.
- 14.Solve 3(2x − 1) = 27
- 15.A colony of bacteria doubles in number every hour. At 9am there are 5 bacteria in the colony. Work out how many bacteria there will be at 12 noon.
