- 1.The numbers x and y satisfy x + y = 10 and xy = 21. Work out the pair of values.
- 2.Line P has equation y = −2x + 5 and line Q has equation 2y = x + 6. Are lines P and Q perpendicular to each other?y = -2x + 5y = x + 6
- 3.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 2x + y = 8.
- 4.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² − 10x + 30.y = x² − 10x + 30
- 5.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 6.A car's journey is represented by a velocity-time graph. The total distance travelled, found from the area under the graph, is 350 metres, and the total time for the journey is 25 seconds. Work out the car's average speed for the whole journey, in m/s.
- 7.Two numbers have a sum of 50. The larger number is twice the smaller number. Work out the smaller number.
- 8.Work out the value of 4p² − 3 when p = 2.5
- 9.A speed-time graph shows a constant speed of 15 m/s for 20 seconds. Work out the distance travelled, using the area under the graph.
- 10.A candidate solves the inequality x² > 9 and writes: "x² > 9, so x > 3." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's work?
- 11.A geometric sequence has first term 5, and each term after that is 3 times the term before it. Work out the first term of the sequence that is greater than 1000.
- 12.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 6, 11, 18, 27, 38. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 13.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 14.The graph of y = f(x) has roots at x = −1 and x = 4, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Which statement about the graph of y = f(x − 3) is correct?
- 15.Solve the simultaneous equations y = 3 − x and x² + y² = 9, giving both pairs of solutions.
