- 1.The diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function. Which equation could it represent?
- 2.The equation x³ − 2x − 7 = 0 has exactly one solution. It can be found using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(2xₙ + 7), with starting value x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out the solution correct to 2 decimal places, iterating until two consecutive values round to the same 2 decimal places.
- 3.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 4.The equation x² − x − 6 = 0 has roots x = 3 and x = −2. It can be rearranged as xₙ₊₁ = xₙ² − 6. This formula is used with starting value x₀ = 2.9, close to the root x = 3. Work out what happens to the sequence of values as n increases.
- 5.Priya has a budget of £50 for a school trip. The coach costs £14 and each student ticket costs £4. Using the inequality 14 + 4s ≤ 50, work out the greatest number of student tickets, s, she can buy.
- 6.One solution of the equation x² − (k + 1)x + k = 0 is x = 3. Work out the value of k.
- 7.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(2xₙ + 3) is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 1. As n increases, the values of xₙ converge to a limit, L. Work out L.
- 8.A rectangle is x cm wide and twice as long as it is wide, so its area A cm² is given by A = 2x². Work out A when x = 3.
- 9.Work out the gradient of a line that is perpendicular to the line with equation 2x + 3y = 6.
- 10.The formula y = x² + 1 gives y in terms of x. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x² + 1
- 11.The formula for the area of a trapezium is A = (a + b)h / 2, where a and b are the parallel side lengths and h is the height. Make h the subject of the formula.
- 12.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + 2y = 16 and x + y = 7. Work out the value of y.
- 13.Work out the value of 2(x + 2) when x = −5
- 14.Isla says that the lines y = 2x + 1 and y = −2x + 3 are parallel. Write down the statement that gives the correct answer for the correct reason.y = 2x + 1y = -2x + 3
- 15.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
