- 1.A candidate solves the inequality x² > 9 and writes: "x² > 9, so x > 3." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's work?
- 2.(2x + 3)(x + a) ≡ 2x² + 11x + 12 is an identity. Work out the value of a.
- 3.A taxi company charges a £2.50 booking fee plus £1.80 per mile. A journey costs £15.10 in total. Work out the number of miles travelled.
- 4.Look at the statement 2x + 5 = 17. Considering whether it is an expression, an equation, a formula, or an identity, which classification is correct?
- 5.Write down the first four terms of the sequence with nth term 6n − 5.
- 6.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a cyclist at times, in seconds, 1 second apart: 0 at t = 0, 7 at t = 1, 12 at t = 2, 15 at t = 3, 16 at t = 4, 14 at t = 5, 9 at t = 6. Using the trapezium rule with strip width 1 second, estimate the distance the cyclist travels between t = 2 and t = 5 only.
- 7.The 2nd term of a geometric sequence is 6 and the 4th term is 24. Given that all the terms of the sequence are positive, work out the common ratio.
- 8.Solve 4(x − 3) = 2x + 6.
- 9.Which of these pairs of lines are perpendicular to each other?
- 10.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 12 ÷ (xₙ + 2) is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 1. Work out the value that xₙ approaches, correct to 2 decimal places.
- 11.A Fibonacci-type sequence begins 3, 5, 8, 13, ... where each term after the second is the sum of the two terms before it. Work out the 7th term of the sequence.
- 12.The area under a speed-time graph between t = 0 and t = 6 seconds is estimated using three strips of equal width, using the speeds, in m/s, at t = 0, 2, 4 and 6: 0, 5, 9 and 12. Using the trapezium rule with these three trapezia, estimate the distance travelled.
- 13.The first term of an arithmetic sequence is 5, and each term after that increases by 6. Work out the 8th term of the sequence.
- 14.A company's weekly profit, P thousand pounds, when it makes x thousand items is modelled by P = x² − 8x + 12, for x ≥ 0. Work out the values of x for which the company makes a loss.
- 15.A fundraising chain letter starts with 3 people taking part in round 1. Each following round has 4 times as many people taking part as the round before. Work out the number of people taking part in round 4.
