- 1.The equation x² − 3x − 7 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(3xₙ + 7). The starting value is x₀ = 4, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 2.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (5, 8). Which of these correctly gives the corresponding turning point on the graph of y = −f(x + 1), and its type?
- 3.A quadratic graph y = ax² + bx + c has its turning point on the y-axis. Which statement about its roots must be true?
- 4.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (4, −5). The graph of y = f(x) + a has a minimum turning point whose minimum VALUE is 2. Work out the value of a, and state the coordinates of the minimum turning point of y = f(x) + a.
- 5.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + 2y = 16 and x + y = 7. Work out the value of y.
- 6.Which of these values of x is a solution of x² + 2x − 15 = 0?
- 7.The line y = 3x + 6 meets the x-axis at one point. Work out the coordinates of that point.y = 3x + 6
- 8.A car's speed, in m/s, during a journey is: 0 at t = 0 s, 8 at t = 4 s, and 8 (constant) from t = 4 s to t = 10 s, increasing at a constant rate between t = 0 and t = 4. Estimate the total distance the car travels, using the areas of a triangle and a rectangle.
- 9.A geometric sequence has first term 4 and common ratio √2. Work out the sum of the first three terms of the sequence, giving your answer in the form a + b√2.
- 10.Three consecutive integers add up to 72. Using n for the smallest integer, form an equation and solve it to find the smallest of the three integers.
- 11.Line P has equation y = −2x + 5 and line Q has equation 2y = x + 6. Are lines P and Q perpendicular to each other?y = -2x + 5y = x + 6
- 12.Work out the value of m² + 3m when m = −2
- 13.f(x) = x³ − 3x − 5. Given that f(2.2) = −0.952 and f(2.3) = 0.267, work out what this shows about the equation x³ − 3x − 5 = 0.y = x
- 14.A rectangle has width x cm. Its length is 3 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 38 cm. Form an equation and solve it to find x.
- 15.The diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function. Which equation could it represent?
