- 1.A student is proving that (n + 1)² − n² is always an odd number. Which of these correctly completes the first line of algebra?
- 2.f(x) = x³ − 5x − 6. Given that f(2.6) = −1.424 and f(2.7) = 0.183, work out what this shows about the equation x³ − 5x − 6 = 0.y = x
- 3.The height, h metres, of a ball t seconds after a stopwatch is started follows h = (t − 1)(5 − t) for 1 ≤ t ≤ 5, where h = 0 means the ball is at ground level. Work out the two times at which the ball is at ground level.
- 4.Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0 by factorising.
- 5.Which of these statements is an equation with exactly one solution?
- 6.Solve x² − x − 12 = 0.
- 7.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 8.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 9.A geometric sequence has first term 4 and common ratio √2. Work out the sum of the first three terms of the sequence, giving your answer in the form a + b√2.
- 10.A rectangular garden has length (x + 7) m and width (x − 7) m. Work out an expression for the area of the garden, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 11.Which of these is an identity?
- 12.On a map, where each grid unit represents 1 km, Ravi's house is at (−3, 4) and the library is at (6, 4). Work out the distance between Ravi's house and the library.
- 13.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 64. Write down the radius of the circle.
- 14.A cyclist's speed rises from rest to a maximum — quickly at first, then more and more slowly — so her speed-time graph is a curve that is concave down (its gradient decreases as time goes on). A trapezium estimate is made for the distance travelled during this phase, using two points on the curve. Is the trapezium estimate an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance, and why?
- 15.The numbers x and y satisfy x + y = 10 and xy = 21. Work out the pair of values.
