- 1.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
- 2.A circle has centre O(0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 169. The point Q has coordinates (10, 11). Work out which of these gives the correct position of Q together with correct working.
- 3.A rectangle has length (2x + 5) cm and width (x − 2) cm. Work out an expression, in terms of x, for the perimeter of the rectangle. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 4.Solve the simultaneous equations y = x + 1 and x² + y² = 25, giving both pairs of solutions.y = x + 1
- 5.The graph of W = 840 ÷ L shows how the width, W metres, of a rectangular field of area 840 m² depends on its length, L metres. Use the relationship to work out the width when the length is 35 m, and hence the perimeter of the field.
- 6.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 5 − 3/xₙ is used with starting value x₀ = 2.5, so that x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₄ correct to 3 significant figures.
- 7.Solve 2(x + 3) = 10
- 8.On Monday, a runner covers 15 km in 2.5 hours. On Tuesday, she covers 12 km in 1.5 hours. Using the formula speed = distance ÷ time, work out on which day she ran faster, and by how much.
- 9.Work out the value of 2(x + 2) when x = −5
- 10.Solve the inequality 3x − 1 ≤ 11.
- 11.Solve 3(2x − 1) = 27
- 12.The equation x³ + 4x − 9 = 0 is to be solved by iteration. Work out which one of these iterative formulas comes from a correct rearrangement of that equation.
- 13.A curve has equation y = x² − 9. Which statement about its graph is correct?y = x² − 9
- 14.A rule turns each input x into an output y. An input of 1 gives an output of 1, an input of 2 gives an output of 4 and an input of 3 gives an output of 9. Work out the rule.
- 15.The graph of y = x² − 5x + 6 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² − 5x + 6
