- 1.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 2x + y = 8.
- 2.The graph of y = x² − 7x + 2 crosses the x-axis at two points. One root, read from the graph, is approximately x = 0.30. Using the fact that the sum of the two roots of x² − 7x + 2 = 0 is 7, estimate the other root, correct to 2 decimal places.y = x² − 7x + 2
- 3.A candidate solves the inequality x² > 9 and writes: "x² > 9, so x > 3." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's work?
- 4.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (12, 35). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 5.Write down the coordinates of the point where the line y = 2x + 4 crosses the y-axis.y = 2x + 4
- 6.Which expression is equivalent to 6x − (2x − 5)?
- 7.Two numbers have a sum of 50. The larger number is twice the smaller number. Work out the smaller number.
- 8.A region S consists of every point that lies on or above the line y = 2, on or below the line y = x, and on or to the left of the line x = 6. Which of these is the system of inequalities that defines S?y = x
- 9.A stack of firewood has 3 logs in the top layer. Each layer below has 4 more logs than the layer above it. Work out the number of logs in the 6th layer from the top.
- 10.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 11.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 12.Factorise 6x² − 7x − 3.
- 13.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 4, 8, 16, 32, ... Sequence Q: 4, 8, 12, 16, ... Sequence R: 4, 7, 12, 19, ... Sequence S: 4, 9, 16, 25, ... Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 14.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 15.The line y = 3x + 6 meets the x-axis at one point. Work out the coordinates of that point.y = 3x + 6
