- 1.The perimeter, P, of a rectangle with length l and width w is calculated using P = 2l + 2w. What kind of mathematical statement is P = 2l + 2w?
- 2.Which expression is equivalent to 3(x + 4) − 2(x − 1)?
- 3.Work out the smallest positive value of x, in degrees, for which y = tan x is undefined.y = tan(x)
- 4.A charity's fundraising total, T pounds, over d days follows T = (d − 3)(30 − d) for 3 ≤ d ≤ 30, where T = 0 marks the start and end of the campaign. Work out how many days the campaign runs for, from start to end.
- 5.A rule turns each input x into an output y. An input of 1 gives an output of 1, an input of 2 gives an output of 4 and an input of 3 gives an output of 9. Work out the rule.
- 6.A cyclist's velocity increases from 3 m/s to 11 m/s over 5 seconds, at a constant rate. Work out the cyclist's acceleration, in m/s².
- 7.The solution set of a quadratic inequality is {x : x ≤ −3} ∪ {x : x ≥ 5}. Which of these inequalities has this solution set?
- 8.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 6x + 2.y = x² + 6x + 2
- 9.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 10.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a cyclist at times, in seconds, 1 second apart: 0 at t = 0, 7 at t = 1, 12 at t = 2, 15 at t = 3, 16 at t = 4, 14 at t = 5, 9 at t = 6. Using the trapezium rule with strip width 1 second, estimate the distance the cyclist travels between t = 2 and t = 5 only.
- 11.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 12.The simple interest, £I, earned on a savings account is given by the formula I = PRT/100, where P is the amount invested in pounds, R is the interest rate per year and T is the time in years. Rearrange the formula to make P the subject.
- 13.The formula for the energy stored in a stretched spring is E = (1/2)kx², where E is in joules, k is the spring constant in N/m and x is the extension in m. A spring with a spring constant of 40 N/m is stretched so that its extension is 0.3 m. Work out the energy stored in the spring.
- 14.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 15.A model rocket's height is given by h = −5t² + 20t, where h is in metres and t is in seconds. A student says the graph of h against t is n-shaped. Which statement gives the correct verdict on the SHAPE and the reason that settles it from the equation?
