- 1.Which line of algebra shows that the sum of two consecutive odd numbers is always a multiple of 4?
- 2.A student says that (x + 4)² is equivalent to x² + 16. For which value of x do the two expressions give the SAME result, making it look (misleadingly) like the student could be right?
- 3.A car's speed increases steadily while it accelerates. Its speed v m/s after t seconds is given by v = u + at, where u is the starting speed in m/s and a is the acceleration in m/s². A car starts at u = 4 m/s and accelerates at a = 2 m/s² until it reaches v = 20 m/s. Work out t, the time taken in seconds.
- 4.Ben is asked to find the inverse of f(x) = 4 − 3x. He writes f⁻¹(x) = (4 − x)/3. Which statement about Ben's answer is correct?
- 5.A rectangular sheep pen has perimeter P, length l and width w, connected by the formula P = 2l + 2w. A farmer has 60 m of fencing for the perimeter and sets the width at 8 m. Work out the length of the pen.
- 6.A pattern is made from tiles. Pattern 1 uses 4 tiles, pattern 2 uses 7 tiles, pattern 3 uses 10 tiles and pattern 4 uses 13 tiles, with each pattern using 3 more tiles than the one before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of tiles used in pattern n.
- 7.Solve the inequality x² + 6x + 9 > 0.
- 8.A tram travels between two stops. Its velocity-time graph consists of straight line segments joining the points (0, 0), (5, 20), (12, 20), (16, 4) and (20, 4), where time is in seconds and velocity is in m/s. Work out the average speed of the tram over the whole 20 seconds. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 9.Find the common ratio of the geometric sequence 5, 5√2, 10, 10√2, ... Give your answer in surd form.
- 10.Solve the inequality x² ≥ 16, giving your answer using set notation.
- 11.A tank already contains some water and is then filled at a constant rate. After 2 minutes it contains 50 litres in total; after 7 minutes it contains 150 litres in total. Work out the rate at which water is added, in litres per minute.
- 12.Solve 2x² = 18.
- 13.Expand and simplify (x − 3)²
- 14.The curve y = x² − 3x. Use the chord between x = 1 and x = 4 to estimate the gradient of the curve at x = 2.5.y = x² − 3x
- 15.Work out the gradient of a line that is perpendicular to the line with equation 2x + 3y = 6.
